A Match Made in February
The Bride: Ashley PorterThe Groom: Patrick Walsh
Wedding Date: February 6, 2010
Venue: Red Lion Inn
It wasn’t just a winter wedding that Ashley Porter was after when she chose February 6, 2010, as a wedding date. “Every meaningful date throughout our history as a couple, from our first conversation to the proposal, took place in February,” Ashley explains. The Red Lion Inn in Cohasset, Massachusetts, was chosen for its old New England charm and close proximity to Ashley’s hometown of Duxbury. Guests mingled upstairs and down, beneath brightly lit chandeliers in the large open hall. From the outside, the historic inn, built in the 1700s, glowed against the cold winter backdrop.
Ashley’s late mother grew up in Hingham, Massachusetts, and had always loved attending St. Paul’s Church. Even after moving to another town, her mother continued to take Ashley and her three siblings to attend mass there. As a ceremony site, it was an obvious and meaningful choice for Ashley and Patrick. The church’s high, vaulted ceilings and deep red décor combined with the memory of Ashley’s mother created an atmosphere of warmth and love.

The Red Lion Inn, nestled in the seaside town of Cohasset, Massachusetts, was all aglow the night of Ashley and Patrick’s wedding. Their 150 guests enjoyed dinner and dancing in the Lion’s Hall, where large windows revealed a quiet winter scene outside on the main street of the small town. The venue was an easy commute for members of the immediate family who lived along the South Shore. Out-of-town guests sought accommodation in one of the inns 15 cozy rooms.

It was at Country Wedding Bridal Boutique in Hingham, Massachusetts, that Ashley began and ended her search for a wedding gown. The bride describes her satin Alvina Valenta gown with delight: “It felt truly unique and exuded romance.” The trumpet gown featured a lace-trimmed deep sweetheart neckline, empire waist, and delicate, central floral embellishment. She finished the ensemble with a fur bolero jacket, both a gorgeous and functional detail.

Eight girls flanked Ashley’s side in sapphire sweetheart gowns from Priscilla of Boston. The deep blue provided a cool backdrop for Ashley’s icy winter color scheme, balanced by the silver vests and ties worn by the groomsmen. The bridesmaids carried bouquets of ivory, plum, and lavender blooms wrapped in a pewter ribbon.

The floral décor created a sense of warmth while accenting the outdoor conditions through a variety of white, ivory, and soft, icy shades. Dripping crystals, velvety peonies, soft pink roses, and silver details created the illusion of a winter wonderland inside the cozy, romantically lit venue.

Having just lost her mother, Ashley knew that her wedding day would come with at least some sadness. “It was daunting to think of not having her there, so I wanted to make her presence felt without overwhelming other family members,” Ashley explains. A piece of her mother’s wedding dress was used to wrap the base of her bouquet, a subtle but still significant way that her memory was close to Ashley throughout the evening.
Topped with an arrangement of milky white blooms, the three-tiered ivory cake featured a classic scroll design, elegant sapphire ribbon encircling each layer, and a large pearl brooch. The couple, who refers to themselves as “major sweet tooths,” requested that cake be delivered to their bridal suite after the wedding. “We were in heaven sitting on the bed in all of our wedding garb with huge plates of cake!” Ashley describes.
